Free Covered Call Screener

Enter a ticker and see every covered call with annualized ROI and assignment probability, filtered to your DTE and risk rules

Most covered call screeners only show basic metrics—premiums, strike prices, and expiration dates. They don't tell you whether a trade is actually worth the risk. Our covered call screener puts the return and the risk on the same row: every contract shows its annualized ROI and its assignment probability, so you can compare a 7-day call against a 30-day call apples-to-apples.

Solution

Return and Risk on Every Row

Assignment Probability

Every contract shows its probability of finishing in-the-money, from its market delta or a Black-Scholes estimate.

Automatic Annualized ROI

Fair comparison across different timeframes so a 30-day trade can be weighed against a 60-day trade.

2-Year Backtest (Portfolio)

Portfolio can backtest a ticker: how often a fixed DTE and OTM% rule was assigned over the past 2 years, and what it earned.

Risk-Adjusted Score

Sort by a score that discounts 7-day ROI by assignment probability, so high-yield, high-risk calls stop topping the list.

Income-Focused Filters

Set DTE range, strike range (OTM/ATM/ITM), minimum and maximum assignment probability, and minimum liquidity.

Filter and Sort Results

Filter the results table by annualized ROI, assignment probability, IV percentile, OTM%, DTE or RSI.

Save Scans

Free account holders can save a scan’s tickers and filters and re-run it later.

Free Tier Available

Up to 3 scans a day with no account, unlimited single-stock scans with a free account. Portfolio adds the 2-year backtest.

Understanding Covered Call Screening for Income Generation

Covered call screening is the process of systematically searching through the options market to identify stocks where selling call options against shares you own can generate meaningful income. Unlike basic options screeners that simply list high-premium opportunities, a professional-grade covered call screener evaluates the risk-reward balance to help you make informed trading decisions.

The key to successful covered call writing lies in understanding the relationship between premium income and assignment risk. High premiums often signal elevated volatility or upcoming events like earnings announcements, which increase the probability of your shares being called away. Our screener shows an assignment probability for every contract, taken from the option's market delta (or a Black-Scholes estimate when no delta is available), so you can see the premium and the assignment risk side by side.

Key Factors in Covered Call Selection

  • Days to Expiration (DTE): Short-term calls (7-30 DTE) offer higher time decay but require more active management. Learn more about optimal timing in our covered calls by expiration guide.
  • Strike Selection: Out-of-the-money calls provide upside participation but lower premiums. In-the-money calls offer higher income but cap gains. Our screener helps you find the right balance.
  • Implied Volatility: Higher IV means larger premiums but also greater assignment risk. Understanding implied volatility is crucial for consistent results.
  • Delta as Probability Proxy:Delta approximates the probability of assignment at expiration. Our screener uses each option's market delta as its assignment probability, and falls back to a Black-Scholes estimate when the data provider has no delta for a contract.

Integrating Covered Calls into Your Overall Strategy

Covered calls work best as part of a comprehensive income strategy. Many traders combine them with cash-secured puts in what is known as the wheel strategy, creating a continuous cycle of premium collection. When your covered call is assigned, you can immediately begin selling cash-secured puts to potentially reacquire the shares at a lower price.

For traders with limited capital, the poor man's covered call strategy using LEAPS as a stock substitute can provide similar income potential with reduced capital requirements. The screener's LEAPS tab can help you find the long leg; the covered call tab covers the short call.

Tax Considerations for Covered Call Writers

Understanding the tax implications of covered call writing is essential for accurate return calculations. Premiums received are generally treated as short-term capital gains, while assignment can trigger long-term gains if you've held the underlying shares for over a year. Our covered call tax rules guide provides detailed information on wash sale rules, qualified covered calls, and reporting requirements.

When to Roll vs. Allow Assignment

One of the most important decisions in covered call management is whether to roll a position approaching expiration or allow assignment. Scanning the next expirations shows what a roll would pay, but understanding the mechanics is crucial. Read our rolling covered calls strategy guide to learn when rolling makes sense and when it's better to let the shares go.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about getting started

What makes this covered call screener different from Barchart or my broker's screener?

While free screeners like Barchart show basic options data (bid, ask, volume, delta), they don't help you evaluate trade quality. Our screener adds an assignment probability and annualized ROI to every contract so you can compare a 7-day trade against a 30-day trade fairly. Most broker screeners are even more limited—they're designed for execution, not analysis. We built this specifically for income-focused traders.

Is there a free covered call screener tier available?

Yes. Without an account you can run up to 3 covered call scans a day, with every filter and the assignment probability on every contract. A free account makes single-stock scans unlimited and lets you save scans. Portfolio adds the 2-year backtest.

How is assignment probability calculated?

Each contract's assignment probability is the estimated chance the stock finishes above the strike at expiration. We use the option's delta from our market data provider; when a contract has no delta, we fall back to a Black-Scholes estimate from its implied volatility. It is a model estimate, not a historical rate. It ignores early assignment, which matters mainly for in-the-money calls just before an ex-dividend date. For history, Portfolio can backtest a ticker: how often a fixed DTE and OTM% rule was assigned over the past 2 years.

Can I compare different expiration cycles fairly?

Yes—our automatic annualized ROI calculation lets you compare opportunities across different timeframes. A 5% return in 2 weeks beats a 10% return in 3 months when annualized. This helps you prioritize the most efficient income opportunities regardless of expiration date.

What filters are available in the screener?

Before the scan: DTE range, strike range (OTM, ATM, ITM), minimum and maximum assignment probability, and minimum liquidity. After the scan, filter the results table on any column, including annualized ROI, 7-day ROI, assignment probability, IV percentile, OTM%, strike, DTE, liquidity, RSI and distance from the 50- and 200-day moving averages.

Can I use this if I don't have a large portfolio?

Yes. The screener needs no account and no broker connection, so you can check calls on any stock you own or are considering buying. A covered call needs 100 shares per contract, so the premium per contract shows what one lot would earn.

What is risk-adjusted yield ranking?

The Risk Adj. column discounts each contract's 7-day ROI by its assignment probability: 7-day ROI × (1 − assignment probability)². A 2% yield with 15% assignment risk scores about 1.4%; a 3% yield with 60% assignment risk scores about 0.5%. Sort by it to push high-yield, high-risk calls down the list.

How do I choose the right DTE for covered calls?

The optimal days to expiration depends on your goals. Shorter DTE (7-30 days) offers faster time decay and more frequent opportunities to adjust positions, while longer DTE (30-60 days) provides more premium upfront and less active management. Our screener lets you set the DTE range and shows annualized ROI and assignment probability for each expiration.
